This link will take you to the Aspen Bibliography Search Page. Below you will find basic instructions for conducting "simple searches" and "advanced searches." Additionally, you will find basic instructions for saving and down loading search results. Complete instruction can also be found in the "Help" window found in the bibliography menu.
At the far right of the screen, the Search RefWorks box allows you to enter a word to search the entire contents of the folder or database. The Search RefWorks box searches all fields, and all search terms are connected by the Boolean connector OR. It also searches for embedded terms, i.e., if you search for "art" you will retrieve references with "heart", "part" etc. To narrow your search to specific fields and specific combinations of terms, use the Advanced Search feature. Searches are not case sensitive so you do not need to use capital letters.
Use the Advanced Search option for a very specific search of your database, choosing the field in which you want to search: Author, Title, Periodical, Descriptor, Abstract, Pub Year, Volume, or Ref ID. Connect terms by Boolean operators. The results of an Advanced Search appear alphabetically by author. You can also select "Anywhere" to perform a search for a particular term or phase in any field.
To search more than one field select the Boolean connector you want to use:
| Connector |
Description |
| AND |
Use AND to narrow the search to retrieve records that contain all of the words it separates.
|
| OR |
Use OR to broaden the search and retrieve records containing any of the words it separates. |
| NOT |
And use NOT to narrow the search and retrieve records that do not contain the term following it. |
There are three options for saving and downloading search results: (1) printing the results, (2) creating a bibliography and (3) exporting the search results.
Printing Search Results. This allows you to select references and print the records in the bibliographic output style of your choice. You can also sort your selected records using the sort options at the right of the screen.
Create a Bibliography. You can create a bibliography from search results. You can create your bibliography in your desired output style and in the File Type you choose. You can also preview your finished bibliography and copy and paste it into your document. Sorting is determined by the output style you choose.
Exporting Search Results. Search results can be exported in the following formats:
Bibliographic Software (EndNote, Reference Manager, ProCite) -- Saves the database in a tagged format that can import into another bibliographic management program. It is the format sometimes called the RIS Format or Reference Manager Format and can be imported into Reference Manager, ProCite, EndNote, or any other program that supports the RIS Format.
BibTeX – Ref ID -- Saves the database in the file format for use with the LaTeX document preparation system.
Citation List -- Creates a list to use when writing your paper offline. The format includes the RefID, Authors Primary, Title Primary, and Publication Year only.
RefWorks Tagged Format -- Saves the database in a format similar to the bibliographic management software format. This is a tagged format. The data layout, however, is patterned after the RefWorks database as opposed to tags that match with other bibliographic programs. Use this format for backup purposes and for sharing data with other RefWorks users.
Tab Delimited -- Saves all your data in an organized manner with each field separated by a tab. It may then be loaded into other programs that are designed to read this type of format.
Export Directly to your RefWorks Account -- This option will allow you to log in to your RefWorks account and will automatically import the selected records.
See "Help" in the bibliography menu for more details.
Menu Help. Access to online help and E-mail Database Owner option, which allows you to simply send an custom e-mail to the RefShare User who granted you access. Questions can also be directed to webmaster@aspensite.org
