Overview. This page is dedicated to locating and assessing aspen stands. The Aspen Delination Project believes this is the first step in identifying the ecological status of the habitats. The page presents (1) a database of assessment protocols and field forms and (2) a database of  assessment analyses.

Submissions. If you work with protocols that have been developed for assessment of aspen stands or for assessing the ecological status of species that have a relationship to aspen habitat, please submit them for inclusion in the web page. Send them to webmaster@aspensite.org. Include what the protocol is used for, where it is being implemented, who developed it, and your contact information.

Title: Protocol for Recording Aspen Location and Condtiton

Abstract: A protocol developed in California through a cooperative effort of the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and the California Department of Fish and Game resource managers. Sub-units of five different agencies in California are currently using the protocol. Additionally, it has been distributed to agency units and private landowners in five states in the Western United States.

Availability: Pdf files of the Protocol and Field Form can be downloaded from this site; The protocol, the field form, a computer data entry program, and the interactive training tutorial are also available on a CD. Request from webmaster@aspensite.org.

A paper describing this protocol, presented at the 2003 US Forest Service National Sliviculture Workshop, can be downloaded for review.

Assessment Analyses.

Title: Aspen Delineation Project Data Center

Abstract: In recognizing the importance of facilitating the collection, storage, display, use, and sharing of quaking aspen spatial data within and among the involved agencies and contributing private landowners, the California Department of Fish and Game’s Resource Assessment Program (RAP)  has worked in collaboration with the Aspen Delineation Project and other contributing agencies and organizations in order to:

  • compile aspen location and assessment data statewide,

  • assemble and make available a web application master database that will hold all California aspen assessment and location information,

  • create a user interactive web map of aspen locations,

  • produce a report that presents, summarizes and illustrates our stand of knowledge about the location and assessment of aspen in California

Title: Assessment of the Condition of Aspen on the
Okanogan and Wenatchee National Forests (2004)

Abstract: Aspen, Populus tremuloides, commonly called quaking aspen and trembling aspen, is on all ranger districts on the Okanogan and Wenatchee National Forests in eastern Washington. Aspen exists in small scattered stands, typically in riparian areas and moist upland sites. The amount of aspen on the Forests is not well quantified.
Aspen’s contributions to the Okanogan and Wenatchee National Forests far exceed its small stand acreage and relatively small number of stems. Aspen stands are important to many species of wild and domestic animals. It has tremendous aesthetic value. Aspen has never been harvested for timber products in significant volumes or numbers on the Okanogan and Wenatchee National Forests. The condition of aspen stands on the Okanogan and Wenatchee National Forests was not known, leading to requests for a condition assessment survey.
